According to Statista, as of 2019, the private jet and yacht industry was valued at 24 Billion Dollars. The value and importance of private jets emerged even higher after the onset of the pandemic in 2020.
With cleanliness taking a high seat, several people wondered about the cleanliness provided in commercial jets versus that in private jets. Let’s take a look at both and compare the level of cleanliness.
Air quality
Many people are concerned about air quality in airplanes, specifically after the onset of the pandemic. People are often concerned that within closed spaces, there is a higher chance of contracting infections or coming into contact with pathogens. Commercial aircraft are equipped with HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air). It is due to these HEPA filters that the air in commercial airplanes is still better.
Now, on to private jets. Most private jets use any of these two systems for clean air circulation – 100% fresh air system or HEPA. In a 100% fresh air system, fresh air is brought from the outside and then is compressed and sterilized before entering the cabin. This way, the air is much cleaner, and there are reduced chances of the circulation of bacteria or viruses.
The second system is HEPA, and besides private jets now also incorporate filter systems that can capture viruses and bacteria before they are circulated.
Cleaning procedure
With commercial airplanes holding many passengers that can vary between 150 to 300, cleaning doesn’t always come easy. Contrary to the popular notion, the bathroom is not the only place where you should be cautious. Seatback trays are the dirtiest on the airplanes, more so than the bathroom flush button. Seat belt buckles and headrests are also not as clean as you thought them to be. With the onset of the pandemic, strict hygiene and cleanliness rules have been in place to clean commercial airplanes.
Private jets were always cleaner than commercial planes, but with the onset of the pandemic, the private airplanes, and their clean environment have become even more vital. Private jets are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before and after each flight, and rigorous cleaning methods are used to make sure that the plane is disinfected completely. Particular attention is being given to cleaning high-touch areas like headrests, armrests, tables, window blinds, and the most important, the restroom. It also includes thorough wiping and the use of a disinfectant to sanitize the surface of the plane.
Social distancing measures and their impact on the cleanliness
Commercial airlines have taken a good number of measures to provide social distancing during the flight. However, with 150 to 300 people on board, it can be tough to provide social distancing and maintain consistent hygiene.
However, with private jets, the situation is better. With fewer people on-board and seated at a decent distance, the situation is a lot better.
Private jets might cost more than commercial jets, but the cleanliness and safety that they provide make them a better choice for many.
